Tim Smith Band- Fifth Season Gardening; 4:00- After more than a decade,this North Carolina <br /> band formerly called The Jumpstarts is still cooking up a deliciously original blend of great <br /> music. Based in traditional 1950s style Jamaican ska and reggae,the group stirs in a heavy <br /> helping of jazz with a sampling of gospel and blues. Seasoned with soul and a dash of funk, this <br /> concoction really simmers. Like an old family recipe passed along from one generation to the <br /> next, the dish of a band only gets better with time. <br /> Big Fat Gap- Fifth Season Gardening; 6:00- Big Fat Gap is a back porch bluegrass band that has <br /> no plans to take Nashville by storm. Some of them even have day jobs. They just like to pick, <br /> they like each other, and it shows. Their shows are known to be excellent for those who enjoy <br /> sweet three part harmonies, smoking solos, and captivating stage dynamics. Their fun <br /> performances bring loyal fans back for more They are Miles Andrews on lead vocals and Bass, <br /> Rick Hauchman on mandolin& vocals, Andy Thorn on banjo, Bobby Britt on fiddle and Jamie <br /> Griggs on Guitar. <br /> Tony Galiani- ArtsCenter's Wynn Theater; 6:00-The Tony Galiani Band plays a variety of jazz <br /> styles with an emphasis on improvisation and interplay among the group members. Their <br /> repertoire features a variety of jazz styles and arrangements which allow the band to stretch out <br /> on each tune. The band features Mietek Glinkowski on violin and Doug Norton on piano. Bill <br /> Hayes may play drums and Tony Galiani on bass. <br /> Great Big Gone- Weaver Street Market; 4:15- Great Big Gone is a group of Triangle music <br /> veterans brought together by a passion for the many facets of American roots music. Their <br /> repertoire is a carefully-crafted amalgam of styles from electrified porch picking and honky tonk <br /> to blues to Western Swing to roots rock, consisting primarily of original compositions. The result <br /> is a tasty mix of sharp songwriting, three-part harmonies and a classic Americana musical <br /> palette. <br /> Saludos Compay- Tyler's Parking Lot; 7:00- They take the audience on a musical tour that <br /> features traditional, contemporary, and original music from Latin America and the Caribbean. <br /> This amazingly versatile trio keeps toes tapping. Lead vocalist/guitarist Pablo Valencia, from <br /> Chile, sings a wide range of styles. He is as much at ease with a reflective bolero as with an <br /> upbeat salsa. The group performs a number of Valencia's acclaimed original compositions, such <br /> as the romantic Cancion Para Dos, the rumba Bello Amor, and the very upbeat salsa song <br /> Entumido. On keyboards, Erich Lieth adds spice to the strong Latin rhythms with <br /> improvisational piano solos and bass. Chuck Nolan, lead percussionist, intricately weaves the <br /> rhythm patterns, be it for a subtle bossa nova or a danceable cumbia. <br /> See No Weevil- Balloons & Tunes/Framer's Corner; 4:00- See No Weevil is a funky little trio <br /> that delivers an infectious (infectious?) mix of eclectic music, most of it with a blues and R&B <br /> flavor. Some are originals, the others mostly reinterpretations of other tunes that never made a <br /> chart. In short, the band plays a lot of danceable tunes you haven't heard before, but'll want to <br /> hear again. The trio is John Soady on guitar and (if the fancy seizes him), lap steel, Brunson <br /> Hoole on drums and percussion and Jeff Elliott on bass guitar and (when strung out, so to speak) <br /> upright bass. <br />
