201 4-201 S Arts Program Grant—Spring 4 <br /> Orange County Arts Commission <br /> The ArtsCenter: School Show Series <br /> JABALI AFRICAN ACROBATS: Direct from Mombassa, Kenya these phenomenal acrobats <br /> combine the artistry of fast paced movement, music, dance and incredible acrobatic elegance to perform <br /> a full stage theatrical extravaganza. <br /> This thrilling performances exemplifies the link between athletics and the arts, as incredible acrobatics, <br /> contortions, tumbling, human pyramids, and chair balancing skill of these performers turns to dance, <br /> with the Congo Snake Dance, the Flaming Limbo Bar Dance, Skip Rope Footwork techniques and <br /> comedy to electrifying music. Audience participation is always included. <br /> In addition to theatrical performances, stage shows and festivals worldwide the Jabali Acrobats perform <br /> NBA and College halftimes, and tour regularly with the Harlem Globetrotters. Other performances <br /> include a special invitation to perform for President Clinton in the White House, the Big Top Universoul <br /> Circus, the Big Apple Circus in New York, E.S.P.N. In the early days of his career, Wiley found few theatrical resources to shine a light on key <br /> events and figures in African-American history. To bring these stories to life, he started his own <br /> production company. <br /> Through his performances, Wiley has introduced countless students and communities to the legacies of <br /> Emmett Till, Henry "Box" Brown and more. His most recent works include a one-man play based on <br /> Tim Tyson's memoir Blood Done Sign My Name and The Parchman Hour, an ensemble production <br /> celebrating the bravery and determination of the Freedom Riders who risked their lives to desegregate <br /> Southern interstate bus travel in 1961. <br /> Mike Wiley has a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the <br /> 2010 Lehman Brady Visiting Joint Chair Professor in Documentary Studies and American Studies at <br /> Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They tour the world sharing their unique mix of cutting edged contemporary <br /> choreography and traditional rhythm tap spiced with singing, pencil drumming, beat boxing, body <br /> percussion and even Taiko drumming. <br /> They offer a non-stop percussive dance review peppered with stories, history, and facts about the forms <br /> presented.
