ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 17, 2014 <br />SUBJECT: Solid Waste Advisory Group — BOCC Appointments <br />DEPARTMENT: Board of Commissioners <br />ATTACHMENT(S): Under Separate Cover <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 11 -e <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (Y /N) No <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Clerk's Office, 245 -2130 <br />1 <br />PURPOSE: To consider making 2 BOCC appointments to the Solid Waste Advisory Group <br />(SWAG) and to appoint the Chair. <br />BACKGROUND: The Orange County Board of Commissioners approved at their June 3rd <br />meeting the creation of the Solid Waste Advisory Group (SWAG): <br />The Board decided to: <br />1) to create a multijurisdictional task force of at least one year's duration to articulate, <br />investigate, and propose collaborative solutions for solid waste issues confronting Orange <br />County; the towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough; and the University of North <br />Carolina at Chapel Hill; <br />2) plan to make BOCC appointments to the task force at the Board's June 17, 2014 regular <br />meeting; and <br />3) solicit other representatives from the other jurisdictions, the University and the public (5 at <br />large positions) as soon as possible <br />4) This task force will prioritize the proposed issues listed in this agenda item (listed below for <br />information purposes): for its consideration for analysis. <br />5) A County Commissioner will serve as Chair of this work group. <br />The charge to the group at the outset is to define the nature, scope, and timing of the <br />solid waste issues to be considered, including but not limited to- <br />* an interlocal agreement on solid waste; <br />• reducing solid waste that is not recycled; <br />• recycling opportunities and services; <br />• siting a transfer station or landfill within the county; <br />• supporting public education on solid waste issues; <br />• construction and demolition waste; <br />
