il <br />1 Janice Tyler said the purpose of this is to proclaim May as Older Americans Month. She <br />2 said the national theme is "Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow." She said there are over 22,000 <br />3 older adults ages 60 and better in this community, and 1,600 of these residents are over age <br />4 85. She said the goal is to promote a healthy active lifestyle. She encouraged the community <br />5 to get to know their local senior center and participate in an exercise program. She outlined <br />6 several upcoming programs. She said she is proud of the department, and she thanked the <br />7 Commissioners for their support. <br />8 She read the following proclamation: <br />9 <br />10 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />11 Proclamation <br />12 Older Americans Month — May 2014 <br />13 Theme - "Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow" <br />14 <br />15 Whereas, Orange County includes over 22,000 persons aged 60 and older; and <br />16 <br />17 Whereas, Orange County is committed to helping all individuals live longer, healthier lives; and <br />18 <br />19 Whereas, the older adults in Orange County have made countless contributions and sacrifices <br />20 to ensure a better life for future generations; and <br />21 <br />22 Whereas, the Orange County Board of Commissioners recognizes the value of injury <br />23 prevention and safety awareness in helping older adults remain healthy and active; and <br />24 <br />25 Whereas, our community can provide opportunities to enrich the lives of individuals young and <br />26 old by: <br />27 <br />28 ■ Supporting their ability to stay healthy and physically active <br />29 ■ Emphasizing the need to take action to safeguard themselves from unintentional injuries <br />30 where they live, work and socialize <br />31 ■ Providing information on avoiding leading causes of injury for older adults, particularly <br />32 falls and offering opportunities to participate in falls prevention fitness programs. <br />33 ■ Creating opportunities to stay engaged and active in their communities. <br />34 <br />35 Now therefore, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim May <br />36 2014 as Older Americans Month and urge every resident to take time this month to recognize <br />37 older adults and the people who serve and support them as powerful and vital individuals who <br />38 greatly contribute to the community. <br />39 <br />40 This, the 8th day of May, 2014. <br />41 <br />42 A motion was made by Commissioner Price, seconded by Commissioner Gordon for the <br />43 Board to approve the proclamation designating May as Older Americans Month and authorize <br />44 the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br />45 <br />46 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />47 <br />48 5.
