J _
CHICLE INSTITUTE
.sa a +rise , Translation , Int perm cervices
101 East Weaver Street
P floor, Suite G1
Carrboro, NC 27510
www.chi-cle.com - 19-933-0398 • chicleCchi-cte.com
Marlyn Valeiko
LEP Specialist
mvaleiko@orangecountync.gov
March 26,2014
If approved by Orange County,CHICLE will develop Oral scripts that relate to
real-life situations that an employee will encounter, they will include regional ,
expressions and slang. Both speaking and listening comprehension will be
measured through these simulated interviews. The scenarios will include:
• 2 Health scenarios(related to maternal,child,'immunizations,
well-child or check-up appointments)
• 1 Dental
• 2 Social services (CPS and home visit)
• 1 Generic
Each of the instruments will be designed with scoring in mind, a scoring form
will be developed to allow the assessor to assign a numerical score for each part.
These scores will then be grouped and classified based on the agreed standard.
Each scenario will include:
• an English questionnaire
• a script in Spanish that the assessor will use to simulate the client's
responses
• scoring form with answer key.
These scenarios will be used as follows:
During the assessment, the person being screened is first to introduce him or
herself and make the client comfortable. She or he then asks each question in
Spanish and writes down,in either English or Spanish, the responses given by
the screener. However the copy that is given to the screener for scoring must be
in English. The person will have time at the end of the interview to rewrite the
important information on a clean copy of the form if s/he wants. The screener
can be asked to speak more slowly or to repeat if necessary. The idea here is to
simulate the beginning of an actual encounter.
Language instruction 0 Occupation-specific Spanish * Group and private classes
Translations+ Interpreting 0 Cultural training * Cultural events
