Habitat for Humanity — Property Acauisition in Northside for Sinale- <br />Family Home: $55.000 <br />The Council allocated funds to Habitat for Humanity for the purchase of a lot on Craig <br />Street in the Northside neighborhood. Habitat for Humanity intends to purchase the <br />lot from Self -Help Community Development Corporation and plans to build a single - <br />family home on the lot which would be sold to a household earning less than 65% of <br />the area median income. <br />This project would serve households earning less than 65% of the area median <br />income and would be consistent with goals identified in the Northside and Pine Knolls <br />Community Plan and the Affordable Housing Strategy. <br />5. Habitat for Humanity —A Brush With Kindness Home Repair: $25.000 <br />The Council allocated $25,000 to Habitat for Humanity for its A Brush With Kindness <br />program. A Brush With Kindness addresses the need of low- income homeowners for <br />exterior repairs, accessibility modifications, and beautification. This initiative would <br />focus on homes in the Northside and Pine Knolls neighborhoods. This program <br />provides an excellent volunteer and community building opportunity for residents, <br />the University and Habitat staff and volunteers. This project would serve households <br />earning less than 80% of the area median income. <br />6. Public Services - $60.500 <br />The use of funds for public services that benefits households earning less than 80% <br />of the area median income is eligible under federal Community Development <br />regulations. Examples of public service activities include programs focusing on <br />employment, crime prevention, child care, health, drug abuse, education, fair <br />housing counseling, energy conservation, homebuyer down payment assistance or <br />recreational needs. The amount of Community Development funds used for public <br />services is based on 15% of the Town's Community Development grant. <br />• Chapel Hill Police Department Youth Employment Program: $25,000 <br />The Youth Employment Program provides job skills training, employment experience, <br />and economic opportunities to Chapel Hill youth aged 14 -18 whose families earn less <br />than 80% of the area median income, with the majority being from households <br />earning less than 30% of the area median income. Many of the participants serve as <br />interns in Town departments. Last summer, there were thirty participants in the <br />program, and this year, the Police Department proposes enrolling the same number. <br />• Community Alternatives for Supportive Abodes (CASA): $9,000 <br />Community Alternatives for Support Abodes (CASA) was allocated funds for its <br />Supportive Housing Program which pairs tenants who are homeless or at risk of <br />being homeless with a safe, quality, and affordable apartment. In addition, the <br />Program provides comprehensive and supportive property management services. In <br />Chapel Hill, CASA assists 23 special needs households to live independently in their <br />own apartments for the long term.
