5 <br /> 1 <br /> 2 This, the 1 st day of April 2014. <br /> 3 <br /> 4 A motion was made by Commissioner Price, seconded by Commissioner Rich to <br /> 5 approve the proclamation designating April as Fair Housing Month in Orange County and <br /> 6 authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 9 <br /> 10 Rollin Russell reminded everyone that there would be a reception on April 10th to <br /> 11 present information to realtors and housing providers, and this event is open to the public. He <br /> 12 said the commission will also make fair housing presentations throughout the year. <br /> 13 Commissioner Dorosin said the Fair Housing Act was one of the most innovative acts of <br /> 14 the civil rights movement. He said this act doesn't just prohibit discrimination, but it also states <br /> 15 that all of us have the right to live in a racially diverse housing community. He said Orange <br /> 16 County has a burden to further fair housing. <br /> 17 <br /> 18 b. Sexual Assault Awareness Month <br /> 19 The Board considered approving a proclamation recognizing April as Sexual Assault <br /> 20 Awareness Month in Orange County and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br /> 21 Rape Crisis Center Executive Director Bryant Colson said, on behalf of the Orange <br /> 22 County Rape Crisis Center, he wanted to thank the Board of County Commissioners. He noted <br /> 23 that the Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and he said this begins a month long event <br /> 24 and program to increase awareness with residents. He said this culminates in an event on April <br /> 25 29th from 6-8 p.m. at Extraordinary Ventures in Chapel Hill. <br /> 26 <br /> 27 Commissioner Rich read the proclamation: <br /> 28 <br /> 29 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 30 <br /> 31 Proclamation <br /> 32 "Sexual Assault Awareness Month" <br /> 33 <br /> 34 WHEREAS, the Orange County Rape Crisis Center assisted over 600 survivors of sexual <br /> 35 violence, their loved ones, and community professionals during 2013; and <br /> 36 <br /> 37 WHEREAS, the Orange County Rape Crisis Center works with the County's two school <br /> 38 systems and other groups to provide students with age-appropriate information about violence <br /> 39 prevention, reaching over 12,000 youth and adults each year; and <br /> 40 <br /> 41 WHEREAS, the coordination of the Orange County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is <br /> 42 bringing together members of law enforcement, the medical community, the legal system, and <br /> 43 other community advocates to improve services for survivors of sexual assault who come <br /> 44 forward; and <br /> 45 <br /> 46 WHEREAS, 1 in 5 American women have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives <br /> 47 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010); and <br /> 48 <br />
