Petitions by Board Members <br /> 6 Commissioner Gordon referred to the Intergovernmental Parks Work Group's resolution <br /> 7 that had been circulated to the various governmental entities. She said this resolution <br /> 8 describes how the two school systems, the county and the towns will cooperate on the use of <br /> 9 school facilities for recreation. She petitioned the Board to add this resolution to one of the <br /> 10 regular Board of County Commissioners' agendas in May for discussion and consideration. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 4. Proclamations/ Resolutions/ Special Presentations <br /> 13 <br /> 14 a. Fair Housing Month <br /> 15 The Board considered approving a proclamation designating April as Fair Housing <br /> 16 Month in Orange County and authorized the Chair to sign. <br /> 17 <br /> 18 Human Relations Commission's Chair Rollin Russell read the following proclamation: <br /> 19 <br /> 20 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 21 <br /> 22 PROCLAMATION <br /> 23 <br /> 24 FAIR HOUSING MONTH <br /> 25 <br /> 26 WHEREAS, April 2014 marks the 46th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the <br /> 27 31St anniversary of the North Carolina Fair Housing Act prohibiting discrimination <br /> 28 in housing on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, handicap and <br /> 29 familial status; and <br /> 30 <br /> 31 WHEREAS, the Orange County Board of Commissioners enacted the Orange County Civil <br /> 32 Rights Ordinance on June 6, 1994, which affords to the residents of Orange <br /> 33 County the protections guaranteed by Title VIII and additionally encompasses <br /> 34 the protected classes of veteran status and age; and <br /> 35 <br /> 36 WHEREAS, Orange County and the United States Department of Housing and Urban <br /> 37 Development as well as concerned residents and the housing industry are <br /> 38 working to make fair housing opportunities possible for everyone by encouraging <br /> 39 others to abide by the letter and the spirit of fair housing laws; and <br /> 40 <br /> 41 WHEREAS, despite the protection afforded by the Orange County Civil Rights Ordinance and <br /> 42 Title VIII as amended, illegal housing discrimination still occurs in our nation and <br /> 43 in our County; and <br /> 44 <br /> 45 WHEREAS, by supporting and promoting fair housing and equal opportunity, we are <br /> 46 contributing to the health of our County, State and Nation; <br /> 47 <br /> 48 NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Board of County Commissioners of Orange County, North <br /> 49 Carolina, do proclaim April 2014 as FAIR HOUSING MONTH and commend this observance to <br /> 50 all Orange County residents. <br />
