39 <br />o In an emergency situation, the driver shall weigh the risks of running off the road to avoid a collision vs. <br />staying on. Refrain from turning into oncoming traffic and make every attempt to maintain your lane. <br />DRIVER LANDFILL SAFETY <br />General Rules <br />• Employees shall abide by all landfill safety policies and rules which apply to visitors. <br />• Employees shall observe extra safety precautions during wet, icy, dusty, or other inclement weather. <br />• Personal protective equipment shall be available and used by employees as needed. <br />• Reflective or High Visibility clothing, fluorescent - colored vests or stripping are required in any <br />landfill or transfer station environment. <br />• High - topped steel toed, heavy -duty footwear <br />• Hearing protection where and when required. <br />• Safety glasses must be WORN when outside the cab in a landfill or transfer station environment. <br />• Dust (nuisance) masks upon request <br />• Scavenging refuse is dangerous (roll over potential), violates company policy and is strictly prohibited. <br />• Smoking is prohibited on or in the immediate vicinity of the face and as otherwise posted. <br />Unloading Procedures <br />• Opening /closing tailgates, container doors or turnbuckles will be performed as far away from the <br />immediate face as feasible. <br />• Drivers should avoid soft ground or muddy areas whenever possible. <br />• Avoid backing or driving over objects which damage tires or wrap around drive lines. <br />• Exercise caution when backing. Backup warning devices must be in good working order. <br />• Never move your vehicle /equipment if visibility is restricted in any way. Be sure windows are clean and <br />provide a full view of the fill, trucks, spotters, and anything else going on at the face. <br />• When positioning at the face for unloading, attempt to establish maximum spacing between other <br />vehicles (adequate room for doors to open or approximately eight (8) to ten (1 D) feet). <br />• Employees shall notjump from cabs of trucks. <br />• Drivers will be out of vehicles only when necessary. <br />• When on the ground, the driver will stay near the vehicle at all times and once backed into the face will <br />never cross the rear of the vehicle. <br />• Avoid walking beyond the rear tandem or more than 5 feet from side of your truck (in dumping position). <br />• Pull forward at least one truck length away from dump area before doing routine clean -up of tailgates <br />• Pull away from tipping face and shut down engine (key in pocket) prior to cleaning behind the blade or <br />in the back of the truck or container. Review lockout/tag out procedures prior to performing this job. <br />• Drivers are responsible for actively reporting all unsafe conditions or hazards to their immediate <br />supervisor, on a daily basis or as the situation dictates. <br />14!2ste Industries 03431111 Sec. 9.20 <br />
