34 <br />Respiratory Protection (Corporate Determination and Approval Required) <br />o In any situation where air may be contaminated with harmful dust, fog, smoke, etc., over exposure <br />must first be reduced through engineering controls. When engineering controls are not feasible, <br />appropriate respirators or nuisance mask shall be obtained and used. <br />When respirators are required, standard procedure shall include the following: <br />• Wearers must not have facial hair or beards that interfere with the seal. <br />• Wearers shall be examined to determine their physical capacity. <br />• Wearers shall be fit tested before initial use and every six months thereafter. <br />• Training shall include the selection, use and maintenance of the respirator. <br />Protective Clothing <br />• All employees working outside of their vehicles, on routes and in uncontrolled or high traffic areas <br />such as public roads, transfer station floors or at the landfill working face, must wear fluorescent type <br />uniforms, safety vests or similar striping on outermost garments, which must be visible at all times. <br />Standard PPE Class 2, lime yellow garments with adequate reflectivity is required. <br />• Loose fitting clothes, jewelry and long hair can be a safety hazard and shall be confined, i.e., rolled <br />up, pulled up, etc. Shirt cuffs must be buttoned or tightly rolled up. <br />• Company approved protective gloves must be worn by employees when handling materials which <br />may cause injury to the hands or €rritation to the skin. <br />• Six -inch high leather boots with non -slip soles, puncture resistance and toe protection, are required <br />for drivers, maintenance, disposal personnel or any employee exposed to foot rollover or puncture <br />potential. Puncture resistance will be waived for all other employees when determined by hazard <br />assessment. <br />FIRE SAFETY <br />Portable Fire Extinguishes <br />• Portable multi - purpose (ABC Class) fire extinguishers shall be provided at each location and on all <br />collection/support vehicles as required by company and DOT standards. <br />• Fire extinguishers are to be given an annual maintenance check by a qualified servicing company. <br />Each unit should bear a tag showing the last date of servicing. <br />• Visual inspections should be conducted and documented on a monthly basis to ensure units are <br />charged, undamaged, unobstructed and located in their designated space. <br />• All personnel are required to know fire extinguisher locations and to be trained annually in the proper <br />selection, maintenance and use of such equipment. Drivers will only engage incipient fires in a stage <br />that is clearly preventative otherwise; employees will immediately evacuate areas where fire has <br />surpassed the incipient (small) stage. <br />• Supervisors shall make employees aware of the shortest and safest evacuation route as a part of the <br />annual emergency evacuation training.
