2 <br /> RES-2014-009 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING PHILLIPS MIDDLE SCHOOL <br /> TRASH TERMINATORS <br /> WHEREAS, the Trash Terminators, Rohan Deshpande, Helen Jiang and Joshua Zhou, <br /> organized to eliminate recyclables and compostable trash, thus reducing <br /> the amount of trash transported to the landfill; and <br /> WHEREAS, the pilot program "Carton Recycling and Tip Your Liquids" started with <br /> Phillips Middle School by reducing food and beverage waste as well as <br /> redirecting recyclable items; and <br /> WHEREAS, Siemens "We Can Change The World Challenge" selected the Phillips <br /> Middle School Trash Terminators as First Place winners nationally; and <br /> WHEREAS, in continuing a vision of a zero-waste school, Trash Terminators Version <br /> 2.0, Elizabeth Farmer, Quentin Sieredzki, Rohan Deshpande, Graeme <br /> Zimmermann and Vincent Chen, have increased student awareness and as <br /> a result, increased participation; and <br /> WHEREAS, the team has provided community outreach on the importance of <br /> composting and recycling at public events and via social media, and is <br /> working to expand the pilot program to cover additional schools; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> does hereby recognize the Phillips Middle School Trash Terminators <br /> version 1.0 and version 2.0 for their outstanding work in recycling, <br /> composting and protecting the environment for all of Orange County. <br /> This the eighteenth day of February 2014. <br /> Barry Jacobs, Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
