District of Columbia Public Library <br /> Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library <br /> Study and Renovation <br /> PROJECT TEAM <br /> Freelon The District of Columbia's Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was designed by <br /> Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and registered as a National Historic Landmark <br /> LOCATION <br /> Washington,District of Columbia in 2007.After 50 years of service,the MLK Library no longer meets the <br /> needs of a modern central library. Systems are inefficient, technology is <br /> CLIENT CONTACT <br /> Ginnie Cooper lacking, and spaces are not suited to host the multifaceted programs and <br /> DC Public Lib Libraries events of today's library. DCPL came to Freelon with one simple question: <br /> What is the expression of tomorrows library in our nations capital? <br /> ginnie.cooper@dc.gov <br /> T 202.7270321 <br /> SIZE We helped the library imagine flexible, technology enhanced spaces within <br /> 403,000 SF the walls of the historic building. Rather than dismissing the restrictive <br /> COST covenants as barriers to growth,we helped envision a welcoming, light <br /> Estimated$230 Million filled place that was engaged with the street. An expansive atrium connects <br /> OCCUPANCY DATE visitors to their destinations and reveals the multitude of activities offered <br /> TBD by the library. As the new heart of the library,the atrium is filled with spaces <br /> MAIN PROGRAM ELEMENTS that promote collaboration and creative exchange. <br /> Collections <br /> Archives Working closely with constituents Freelon was able to align disparate <br /> Adult g ose y g n P <br /> Popular Reading stakeholders behind shared goals and convince skeptics that great things <br /> Children's Hub were possible.
