53 <br />District of Columbia Public Library <br />Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library <br />Study and Renovation <br />PROJECT TEAM <br />Freelon <br />The District of Columbia's Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was designed by <br />Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and registered as a National Historic Landmark <br />LOCATION <br />Washington, District of Columbia <br />in 2007. After 50 years of service , the MLK Library no longer meets the <br />needs of a modern central library. Rather than dismissing the restrictive <br />COST <br />covenants as barriers to growth, we helped envision a welcoming, light <br />Estimated $230 Million <br />filled place that was engaged with the street. An expansive atrium connects <br />visitors to their destinations and reveals the multitude of activities offered <br />OCCUPANCY DATE <br />TBD <br />by the library. As the new heart of the library, the atrium is filled with spaces <br />MAIN PROGRAM ELEMENTS <br />that promote collaboration and creative exchange. <br />Collections <br />Adult <br />Working closely with constituents, Freelon was able to align disparate <br />Popular Reading <br />stakeholders behind shared goals and convince skeptics that great things <br />Children's Hub <br />were possible. Public presentations and tailored meetings with special <br />Teen Space <br />Adaptive Services <br />interest groups helped to hone ideas and galvanize stakeholders.
