43 <br />Durham County Libraries <br />North, South and East Regional <br />PROJECT TEAM <br />The new Durham County Regional Branch Libraries are designed to <br />Freelon <br />support the County's long -range plan of providing the region with state - <br />LOCATION <br />of- the -art lifelong learning and literacy resources. The new 25,000 Sq. Ft. <br />Durham, North Carolina <br />facilities include large meeting rooms, administrative areas, adult collection, <br />CLIENT CONTACT <br />young adult collection, children's collection, various reading and study <br />Tammy Baggett <br />spaces, computer areas, reference area, and periodicals. <br />Library Director <br />Durham County Library <br />tbaggett @durhamcountync.gov <br />Durham County challenged Freelon to design a kit of parts that would <br />T919.560.0160 <br />leverage efficiency while maintaining flexibility to adapt to individual site <br />SIZE <br />conditions and differing community identities. Each branch is a one- <br />25,000 SF - All <br />story structure organized in a series of layers defined by masonry walls <br />COST <br />and volumes of varying heights. A significant feature of each design is <br />$4.6 million - North Branch <br />$4.4 million -East Branch <br />the open and airy main reading space accentuated by a large shed roof <br />$5.4 million -South Branch <br />that maximizes day - lighting and exterior views. Glazed walls at strategic <br />OCCUPANCY DATE <br />locations along the perimeter of the reading room provide a continuity of <br />June 2006 -East Branch <br />space and vistas into the surrounding landscape. <br />January 2007 - North Branch <br />July 2010 -South Branch <br />The context, development density, and solar orientation of each site <br />East Branch - TY <br />East Branch - <br />necessitated variations in prototypical elements and how the came <br />p Yp' y <br />USGBC LEEDS Certified <br />together. Freelon facilitated extensive public meetings to determine the <br />North Branch- <br />unique character of each library within the economies and constraints of <br />USGBC LEEDS Silver Certified <br />the kit of parts. At the East Branch Library, volumes were kept smaller <br />to respect the more residential scale of the neighborhood. In recognition <br />Seth Branch - <br />USGBC LEEDS Gold Certified <br />of the former use of the South Branch site —one of significance to the <br />Lowes Grove community —the prototype was modified to incorporate <br />AWARDS <br />2008 AIA North Carolina <br />a history gallery at the front entry.
