L <br /> North Carolina Music Performance Adjudication and have earned consistent Superior <br /> ratings since 1994. <br /> Proposed Uses of Grant Funds <br /> The Phillips PTSA Cultural Enrichment Committee plans to use the grant to pay a <br /> portion of the artists'fees for four performances during the 2014 calendar year. These <br /> performances include: <br /> Wednesday, Feb 26: Soul Street Dance Company (6th, 7th and 8th graders): $850. <br /> Attendance population approximately 658 students. <br /> Monday, March 10: Guy Davis, The Routes of the Blues (8th graders): $650. <br /> Attendance population approximately 222 students. <br /> Fall 2014 (dates for two shows TBD): Charles Pettee and the Iron Mountain <br /> Messengers, Bluegrass Stomp (6th and 7th graders): $1,000. Attendance populations <br /> approximately 215 students per show. <br /> All single-grade performances will take place in the auditorium at the school during the <br /> regular school day, to best utilize the students'time and the committee's budget. The <br /> all-school performance by the Soul Street Dance Company will take place in the school <br /> gymnasium during regular school hours. <br /> Soul Street Dance Company will perform its act, Takin' It to the Streets, in February in <br /> one performance for the entire student body, with an attendance population of about <br /> 658 students. The attendees represent the cultural diversity of the school with an <br /> approximate 52%to 48%female to male ratio. This inspirational group of young men, <br /> formerly considered at risk, found focus through dance and now work as professionals <br /> talking not just about dance, but about character and diversity. They take students on a <br /> high-flying participatory trip from Brazil's Capoeria to New York's break dance and the <br /> multi-component forms of Street Dance meet the music of 17th century composer <br /> Vivaldi. In addition, Soul Street incorporates character education into its music and <br /> movement performance, which supports the common core social studies curriculum <br /> being taught to Phillips students that focuses on how environmental factors and culture <br /> affect how people interact with one another. <br /> Soul Street Dance Company contact information is: <br /> httt3:1/souistreetdance.com/site/educationoutreach/ <br /> There is a video embedded on this site that shows clips of their performances. <br /> Guy Davis is a blues musician, composer, actor, director and writer.
