J <br /> Narrative <br /> School Profile <br /> The doors opened at Phillips Middle School in 1963, so Phillips is the oldest middle <br /> school in Chapel Hill celebrating our 50th anniversary this year. Phillips is a <br /> neighborhood school, with many students from the surrounding homes walking or riding <br /> bikes to school. The enrollment at Phillips is 658 children, serving 6th to 8th grade <br /> students. The school offers the core curriculum classes with students in each grade <br /> having two electives per semester. A sample of these electives includes foreign <br /> languages such as Spanish, French and Latin; Exploring Life Skills; Exploring <br /> Technology; Video Production; Sculpture; Visual Arts; Band and Orchestra. The school <br /> also offers programs in Exceptional Education, Gifted Education and English as a <br /> Second Language. <br /> Phillips has a diverse racial composition: White (48%), Black (15%), Asian (20%), <br /> Hispanic (11%) and Multi-Racial (6%) <br /> School Arts Programs <br /> The PTA Cultural Enrichment Committee promotes the cultural arts in education by <br /> bringing a variety of professional artists to perform at our school. During the 2012-2013 <br /> school year, the students enjoyed the following performances: <br /> Paul Taylor, 7th graders. Bright Star <br /> Touring Theatre is an acting group out of Asheville. Their education-based performance <br /> was an inspiring exploration into the lives and work of notable abolitionists and slaves <br /> along America's Underground Railroad, including Harriet Tubman, Levi Coffin and <br /> Frederick Douglas. <br />
