Hutchins Lecture Series - Named for a distinguished Carolina alumnus <br /> who spent most of his life fighting world hunger,the Hutchins Lecture Series is <br /> funded by the Hutchins Family Foundation.Speakers are selected with attention <br /> to their ability to bring scholarly material to mixed public and academic audiences. <br /> Consistent with the Chancellor's emphasis on outreach and engagement,the <br /> Hutchins Lectures bring faculty and students into conversation with community <br /> members to discuss issues of common topical interest. Hutchins Lectures are free <br /> and open to the public. <br /> Southern Film Series-The Southern Film Series is a curated presentation <br /> of three films whose themes reflect a particular aspect of the South's history <br /> or culture. For our inaugural 2011-12 program,we focused on the changing <br /> personal demographics of the South and featured the films Show Boat, Mississippi <br /> Masala, and The Loving Story, in partnership with the Ackland Museum. <br /> Proposed Use of Grant Funds <br /> ConvergeNC Southern Music Festival 2014—Planned Outline of Events: <br /> Friday, April 41h <br /> 7:30—9:30 pm: Headline concert in Memorial Hall <br /> Saturday, April Srh <br /> 10:00 am—1:30 pm: "Beyond Authenticity" -Panel discussions on new ways <br /> of framing Southern music and culture <br /> "3:00 pm to midnight: Musical performances at the Bell Tower <br /> Amphitheater(will likely include rock, blues, electronic, hip hop, old-time, <br /> Cajun,and Norteno acts) <br /> *This is the portion of the festival for which we are applying for OCAC. funding. <br /> OCAC grant funds will be applied to the cost of booking artists for the portion <br /> of ConvergeNC Southern Music Festival that takes place from 3:00 pm until <br /> midnight in the Bell Tower Amphitheater on April 5th, 2014.This portion of the <br /> festival is free and open to all and takes place at a central location on UNC's campus, <br /> right behind the Bell Tower on South Road.The amphitheater is a wide, open grassy <br /> space, and we encourage people to bring a picnic blanket or Frisbee (we'll also have <br /> food trucks).The amphitheater has a capacity of over 1500. <br /> Last year,throughout the course of the day,we had approximately 1000 <br /> attendees to the festival.The balance between community members and students <br />
