This statement comes from Ms Brandie Fields,Executive Director of the Orange County Historical
Museum.
On behalf of the Orange County Historical Museum I am writing in support of Dr. Iris Chapman's
application for the creation of a mural in what is now Hillsborough Elementary to celebrate the history
of Central High School. The Museum looks forward to working with the Central High Reunion Committee
and Dr. Chapman to add another element to this project in the form of an online exhibit. This online
exhibit would allow the Central High School Committee to provide historical context to the mural that
would be available to students, teachers, parents and the community at large. This online exhibit will be
hosted on the Museum's blog(orangeNChistory.wordpress.com)and will provide information and
images relating to the history of Central High School and the community that preserves and celebrates
its history. The history of Central High School is a crucial part of the area's history,as a segregated
school that served the African-American community. To celebrate, commemorate, and share this history
with the community and the children that walk the same hallways provides them with a sense of how
history affects current day and can exist simultaneously with the present.
