ANDREA CLEARFIELD—COMP_OSER <br /> 400 South Sydenham Street <br /> Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19146 <br /> 215 893 0127(h) 484 4318376(c) <br /> www.andreaclearficid.com <br /> Andrea Clearfield(b.Philadelphia, 1960)is an award winning American composer of music for orchestra,chorus, <br /> chamber ensembles,dance and multi-media collaborations.She has been praised by the New York Times for her <br /> "graceful tracery and lively,rhythmically vital writing",the Philadelphia Inquirer for her"virtuosity","compositional <br /> wizardry"and"mastery with large choral and instrumental forces",the L.A.Times for her"fluid and glistening <br /> orchestration"and Opera News for her works of"timeless beauty".Her works are performed widely in the U.S.and <br /> abroad.Commissions include works for The Philadelphia Orchestra,The Debussy Trio and the Los Angeles Master <br /> Chorale,Carol Wincenc,the Turtle Creek Chorale,the Mendelssohn Club,Orchestra 2001 and Network for New Music. <br /> She is currently composing an opera to libretto by Jean Claude van Itallie and Lois Walden,commissioned by Gene <br /> Kaufman and Terry Eder.She is also composing chamber and choral works for the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus; <br /> Pennsylvania Girlchoir;Philadelphia Orchestra hornist Denise Tryon;Norwegian homist Froydis Ree Wekre,Flute and <br /> Guitar Arc Duo;Oboe and English Horn Duo Agosto;Susquehanna University. <br /> She has composed ten cantatas for voices and orchestra:Her recent cantata,Tse Go La(At the threshold of this life),co- <br /> commissioned by the Mendelssohn Club and the Pennsylvania Girlchoir with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia was <br /> premiered April 29,2012 in Philadelphia with subsequent performances in NYC,NJ and Austin,Tx.The work,for double <br /> chorus,electronics and chamber orchestra,is inspired by her field research in the restricted,remote Himalayan region of <br /> Lo Monthang,Nepal documenting Tibetan music.Recent premieres include "and low to the lake falls home" <br /> commissioned by internationally acclaimed flutist,Carol Wincenc with New York Philharmonic principal players Cynthia <br /> Phelps and Nancy Allen and premiered at the Morgan Library,NYC.Her Women of Valor cantata on the women of the <br /> Bible has been the subject of a story that was nationally broadcast on NPR'S "All Things Considered".Her cantata,Kabo <br /> Omowale,commissioned and premiered by The Philadelphia Orchestra in 2008,had its Midwestern premiere with the St. <br /> Louis Symphony at Powell Hall in 2012. <br /> Dr.Clearfield was awarded international residencies at The American Academy in Rome,the Rockefeller Foundation's <br /> Bellagio Center and the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Italy,Moulin a Nef in Auvillar,France and Fundacion Valparaiso <br /> residency in Spain.Other awards include Yaddo,MacDowell Colony,Djerassi,Blue Mountain Center,Helene Wurlitzer <br /> Foundation of New Mexico,Montalvo,Ucross,Virginia Center for the Creative Arts,Ragdale,I-Park,Millay,Kimmel- <br /> Harding Center,Banff Center in Canada,Tyrone Guthrie Center in Ireland and Oberpfalzer Kunstlerhaus in Germany <br /> among others.She has recently been guest composer at the Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory in St.Petersburg,Russia,the <br /> University of Texas at Austin,the University of Chicago and the College of William and Mary.She has received grants <br /> and awards from numerous organizations including ASCAP,the NEA,American Music Center,American Composers <br /> Forum,Meet the Composer,International Alliance for Women in Music,Independence Foundation,Leeway Foundation <br /> and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. <br /> A native of Philadelphia,she received a D.M.A.in composition from Temple University where she was a two time <br /> recipient of the John Heller Memorial Award for Excellence in Composition and the first composer to receive the <br /> prestigious University-wide Presidential Fellowship.She received an M.M.in Piano from the Philadelphia College of the <br /> Performing Arts(now University of the Arts) where she was a student of Susan Starr and a B.A.in Music from <br /> Muhlenberg College where she was awarded Summa Cum Lauda and Phi Beta Kappa honors,and first prize in <br /> performance and musicianship.She served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at The University of the Arts teaching <br /> composition and interdisciplinary arts from 1986-2011,and is the pianist in the contemporary music ensemble,Relache. <br /> Now celebrating its 27th year,Clearfield is also the founder and host of the renowned Philadelphia Salon concert series, <br /> featuring contemporary,classical,jazz,electronic,multimedia and world music and winner Philadelphia Magazine's 2008 <br /> "Best of Philadelphia"award.
