Arts in Education Grant—Fall 2013-14 McDougie Elementary School PTA
We are seeking matching funds to pay artists' fees for the following performances, which will be
held on school premises in January 2014.
One Noble Journey, presented by Mike Wiley
Audience: 3, 4, 5 (-260 students representing MES diversity)
Show length: 50 minutes
Show date: January 2014
Study Areas: Social Studies, Theatre Arts, English Language Arts
Mike Wiley is an incredible performer, who is based locally but travels widely for his
performances. His one-man shows are riveting explorations into history that captivate
audiences. His frequent use of audience participation throughout his shows ensures that the
students are engaged and provide them opportunities to be a part of the experience.
One Noble Journey is based on the life of Henry"Box" Brown, an African American born into
slavery in 1816 in Louisa County, Virginia. Although he was not subjected to physical violence,
Henry's story demonstrates the cruelty of slavery was every bit as devastating to the heart as it
could be on the body.
Ca o ° NC Essential Standards/Common Core Standards Addressed
3.H.1 Understand how events, individuals and ideas have influenced history of
local and regional communities.
Social 3;H.2 Use historical thinking skills to understand the context of events, people and
Studies places
5.H.1 Analyze the chronology of key events in the United States
5.H.2 Understand the role of prominent fgures in shaping the United States
3-5.A.1 Analyze literary texts and performances
Theatre Arts .5.CU.1 Analyze theatre in terms of the social, historical, and cultural contexts in
which it was created
SL.3.2 Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or
English information presented orally or through other media
Language SL4.2 Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse
Arts media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally
SL.5.2 Summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse
media and formats, including visuall , quantitatively, and orall
LI Liu
Audience: K, 1, 2 (--260 students representing MES diversity)
Show length: 50 minutes
Show date: January 2014
Study Areas: Social Studies, Dance, Music, Theatre Arts
Li began performing in schools in 2005, at first collaborating with other circus artists, and
eventually developing her own solo show. The performance includes hand balancing, plate
spinning, trick cycling, foot juggling, ribbon dancing and Chinese water bowl manipulation. Li
also touches on various aspects of Chinese language, geography and culture while sharing her
work and travel experiences with the students and staff.
The show is primarily geared toward elementary school audiences. Students get a hands-on
shot at trying some of the easier(and safer!)skills such as ribbon dancing and basic plate
spinning. They learn the historical significance of traditional lion and dragon dances and are
encouraged to think about what it might have been like to grow up in a different time and place.
