Current Grants from OCAC: Programs and Services
There are no current grants from OCAC underway through the Public School Foundation.During
each of the Grant Writing Workshops we host we inform teachers and parents of the arts grants available
from the Orange County Arts Commission and encourage their applications.
During the 2012-2013 academic year,Phoenix Academy High School Arts Program was awarded
a Student Enrichment Grant by the Orange County Arts Commission(through the Public School
Foundation)for their Spoken Word Project. During workshops hosted by an artist in residence from the
Sacrificial Poets, students were active participants and were able to develop the skills to participate in
poetry events at the Chapel Hill Teen Center,Flyleaf Books, the Carrboro Arts Center and UNC. The
Phoenix Academy High School Arts Program enabled students to have a chance to tell their stories and
cultivated a sense of community in the classroom that extended beyond the high school building.
Because the student population is so small at Phoenix, they receive no district funding for the cultural
arts, so this grant was hugely important in exposing the students to poetry and community resources.
During the 2012-2013 academic year, the Orange County Arts Commission(through the Public
School Foundation)also funded a music program at Carrboro Elementary School in which six 3/4 size
guitars, six guitar cases and three tuners were purchased for guitar lessons to be taught to 6-8 children
over a series of eight week sessions after school. The afterschool guitar program, taught by a volunteer
teacher, allowed students who were interested in music, but in many cases would otherwise not have
access to music outside of music class at school, the opportunity to have private music lessons.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds
• Location/Dates/Artists--Ten of the eleven elementary schools in the Chapel Hill Carrboro City
Schools District have Preschool Intervention Programs. These schools are: Carrboro Elementary,
Ephesus Elementary,Estes Hills Elementary,Frank Porter Graham Bilingue, Glenwood
Elementary,McDougle Elementary,Northside Elementary,Rashkis Elementary, Scroggs
Elementary, and Seawell Elementary. The Preschool Intervention Program provides a variety of
services for preschool children with special needs and their families in our district. This program
is for 3-and 4-year-old children and 5-year-old children who are not yet eligible for kindergarten.
A large percentage of these children, 88 percent, meet the federal guidelines for free or reduced
school meals and 80 percent are of African-American,Latino,Burmese/Asian or mixed race
heritage. For 2013-2014,over 100 children with IEP(Individualized Education Plans)and 30+
staff members would benefit from the equipment purchased with grant funds. The Preschool
serve a total of about 220 children. Additionally, the materials would be used for years to come
future preschoolers and staff as well.
Accessible Music and Play for All Preschool Children will be implemented in 2014 as
soon hs grant funds are available. The Occupational Therapist who works in the preschools
would be responsible for overseeing the use and care of the equipment. All children in the
program will have access to the musical devices and they will be incorporated into the arts
program for use throughout the school year.
• Each School's Art Program—The Preschool Intervention Program targets special needs
children in all the preschools and is focused on preparing the children for elementary school. The
children in the program are exposed to music by imitating teachers who sing songs with children
while they transition from group time to snack,by hearing soft music during naptime,by singing
a good morning song and other songs at circle time,by having children listen to recordings of
