Organization Profile: Mission and History <br /> The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization <br /> whose mission is to create opportunities for students and teachers in every school in the district. We <br /> believe that: <br /> • Every child deserves the best possible education. <br /> • Excellent teachers ignite learning. <br /> • High quality public education is fundamental to a vibrant community. <br /> What We Do— <br /> • Fund promising, innovative educational practices. <br /> • Partner with the community to raise funds that support teachers and students. <br /> • Support students in need of additional academic help and enrichment opportunities. <br /> • Foster opportunities for feedback with teachers and parents. <br /> • Manage funds responsibly with the highest degree of ethical standards. <br /> Established in 1984,the Foundation is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of district <br /> parents,former educators, local business owners, community leaders, and others with a keen interest in <br /> education. Contributions to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation are tax-deductible. <br /> Current Programs and Services <br /> Summary: The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation last year awarded 72 grants to teachers <br /> and/or schools and students impacting 8361 students; funded 55 teaching and staff awards for outstanding <br /> performance;and 20 higher education scholarships for students. The foundation,with the East Chapel <br /> Hill Rotary Club organizes the Teacher Store with free supplies and materials for targeted groups of <br /> teachers each August,hosts the Novice Teacher Tea for first-year teachers, and partners with the Chapel <br /> Hill Restaurant Group to honor teachers and staff with roses and breakfast during Teacher Appreciation <br /> Week. In addition,the foundation serves as a pathway for parents to support quality education at each <br /> school. This event raised over <br /> $125,000 in direct support for schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School district. <br /> • The 5K for Fitness was held in April with over 650 participants and incorporated a 6-week <br /> training program for teachers and staff in conjunction with Fleet Feet Sports. <br /> • Hosted the fifth annual Novice Teacher Tea at which 54 novice teachers received cash gifts to <br /> start off their new careers. <br /> • Held the 11th annual"Teachers First Breakfast"benefit raising more than $65,000 to support the <br /> Teachers First Initiative. The proceeds provide grants for national board certification fees for <br /> teachers and Student Enrichment Grants,as well as support for novice teachers,the PSF-East <br /> Chapel Hill Rotary Teacher Supply Store,the Educator Extra Credit Card and other programs <br /> designed to attract and retain outstanding teachers. <br /> • Awarded 24 grants for teachers pursuing initial certification from the National Board of <br /> Professional Teaching Standards and 5 scholarships for renewal.National board certification is a <br /> self-initiated,rigorous certification standard beyond the required state certification. To date,PSF <br /> has awarded national board certification scholarships to 173 teachers. <br /> • Continued the SMART Board training program K-12 lead by teachers known as "SMART Board <br /> Champions"who,with their colleagues, developed 60 lessons tied to the new common core <br /> curriculum for use by teachers district-wide. <br />
