Project Evaluation Report
Student Enrichment Grants
Please return upon the project's completion..
As stated in your grant award, a brief evaluation report is required at the conclusion of your
project. Feedback on the Student Enrichment Grants (SEGs) enables the Foundation to
improve the process for future cycles and provides important information about ideas that
work and need to be shared and those that face implementation challenges. Thank you for
your assistance.
Project Name: Phoenix Academy High School Arts Program: Spoken Word Project
Project Director: Rachael Kares
Designated Supervisor and School: John Williams, principal
Amount of Project Funding: $1400
Number of Participants: 25-30
Objectives of project:
The purpose of this project is to continue an Arts Program at Phoenix Academy. Students at
PAHS have access to arts-based learning through the Arts Program which is funded by the
Student Enrichment Grant. Arts-based learning is an important aspect to any education; it
offers students the opportunity to think critically and analytically. Art-based learning also
allows students to be innovative and creative in their experiential process. The premise
behind this project is to bring community members into PAHS to facilitate workshops in arts
education. The objective of the 2012-2013 Arts Program was to work in conjunction with the
Sacrificial Poets, a non-profit spoken word poetry youth program.
Please summarize the results of this project. Please refer to your application to report back on
the evaluation piece as you described it in applying for the grant (attach pages as needed
The results of the 2012-2013 PAHS Arts Program were a success. Students enrolled in ELA
courses worked with workshop facilitators each semester. We held one to two week long
intensives in which students worked with an artist in residence from the Sacrificial Poets.
Students actively participated in accountable talk practices, developed speaking and listening
skills, and continued to polish their writing and performance abilities. Common Core
standards were addressed throughout the workshop series as the facilitators worked with me
to address learning benchmarks. Additionally, the workshop facilitators collaborated with me
to integrate my current curriculum into their workshops. I also worked with workshop
facilitators to create modified assignments for students that benefit from differentiated
instruction. Students also had the opportunity to work directly in the community. Many PAHS
students have participated in poetry events at the Chapel Hill Teen Center, Flyleaf Books, the
Carrboro Arts Center, and UNC. Many of our students have enrolled in Poetry Club, which is
a branch of the PAHS Arts Program. The PAHS Art Program cultivated a sense of community
in the classroom and extended beyond our building.
