faithfully to guitar class every Thursday from September through June. One student even
made sure that his after school reading tutor understood that"Thursdays are for guitar."And
all of us had a lot of fun together playing guitars all year.
Interestingly, our music teacher recently purchased a set of guitars and plans to add guitar to
her curriculum next year.It seems a lot of kids have been asking to learn guitar this year.
How could this project have been improved?
I learned a lot about teaching guitar to children in the course of this project. I personally
have a much clearer idea of how to adapt chords for small hands and how and when to
introduce different types of strums. I also hope to invite guitarist friends to come and play
and teach on occasion. Four of the five kids have been redistricted so I will definitely be
offering this experience to a new group of kids next year. I would like to have more than one
ongoing group, if at all possible.
How did you share the implementation and/or the results of the grant with your colleagues
and/or additional students?
The guitar group performed in December at a school assembly. They have also performed
for their own classes as a group. Several teachers have visited our guitar class and have had
many positive comments. Our assistant principal observed one day and was very excited
about all the good things happening in the group. I have had many conversation with
classroom teachers about this guitar group. To a one, they have noted how excited my
guitarlings are about coming to guitar class. Several people have told me that the kids look
really happy when they are on the way to guitar and when they are in the guitar class. Our
school psychologist told me she believes that the guitar class, and spending that special time
with me, is what kept one child coming back to school and making progess.
The children performed at the our school's end of year assembly. They played and sang
Hokey Pokey and the packed auditorium sang along with them.It was fabulous.
