Project Evaluation Report
Student Enrichment Grants
Please return upon the project's completion..
As stated in your grant award,a brief evaluation report is required at the conclusion of your
project.Feedback on the Student Enrichment Grants(SEGs)enables the Foundation to
improve the process for future cycles and provides important information about ideas that
work and need to be shared and those that face implementation challenges. Thank you for
your assistance.
Project Name:Joy of Guitar
Project Director:Eileen Regan
Designated Supervisor and School: Emily Bivins, Carrboro Elementary School
Amount of Proiect Funding: $975
Number of Participants: 5 in the ongoing project plus 5 more as part of Teacher Treats(part
of the school fair.Kids can buy chances to win a particular activity with a teacher.I
offered guitar lessons and used the grant guitars to teach these lessons.)
Objectives of project:
Teach guitar to a group of 4-6 students one day after school for 8 week sessions
throughout the school year. Each class will last 40 minutes.
I met with the guitar students every Thursday throughout the school year, from September
through June. There were 5 students in the class and all of them came to every lesson with
very few exceptions. There were 3 times when a student had been absent from school and so
could not attend guitar class. There were only two occasions in which a child forgot to come
to"Guitar Thursday."One absence occurred the first time we met.The little girl arrived
home from school in tears because she realized she had forgotten to go to guitar. Her mother,
a refugee from Burma, came in the next day to ask me in her beginner's English if her
daughter could still participate. I gave the child an individual lesson during recess to catch
her up. She never forgot again.I was unavailable for two weeks in May because I was
studying Spanish in Guatemala, another great project funded by the PSF.
The same children attended all year long. Sometimes,a child would come to see me
before school to practice a new chord or simply to play guitar for a few minutes.
