r <br /> Grady A Brown Elementary <br /> 2013-2014 Arts in Education Grant— Fall <br /> Orange County Arts Commission <br /> Application Narrative (#5) <br /> SCHOOL PROFILE <br /> Grady A. Brown Elementary is located about three miles southwest of historic <br /> Hillsborough. The facility, built in 1975, serves area kindergarten through fifth graders <br /> from the Orange County Schools District. The school was named for Mr. Grady <br /> Anderson Brown, who was a well respected teacher, coach, and principal at the old <br /> Hillsborough High School. <br /> The mission of Grady A. Brown Elementary School is to educate all students to their <br /> highest level, of academic performance, while fostering positive development of their <br /> physical, mental, and social well being, so that all students can be contributing citizens <br /> to our democratic society. <br /> Currently, Grady A. Brown Elementary has 35 teachers and 492 students, 46% which <br /> receive free/reduced lunch. <br /> SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAMS <br /> Grady A. Brown Elementary offers the following art programs to every child in the <br /> school: <br /> ➢ Music <br /> ➢ Art <br /> PROPOSED USE OF GRANT FUNDS <br /> In April 2014, world-touring bluegrass musician Charles Pettee will work with <br /> kindergarten through fifth grade students at Grady A. Brown Elementary to study North <br /> Carolina culture through music and dance. <br /> Pettee is co-founder of Flying Fish recording artist The Shady Grove Band from Chapel <br /> Hill, NC, which has delighted audiences across the US, Canada, and Europe for over <br /> twenty years. Pettee has hosted workshops on both guitar and mandolin technique at <br /> some of the most prestigious music festivals in the US and Europe (including Walnut <br /> Valley Festival, Winfield, KS, and MerleFest, Wilkesboro, NC). Pettee has been the <br /> driving force behind Chuck and the Waggin'Ears for over twenty years. Pettee also <br /> offers school programs called "Hear the Sound" which share the history of southern <br /> string music with audiences of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Either solo, or with <br /> The Shady Grove Band, or Chuck and the Waggin'Ears, he has performed over 5,000 <br /> shows in his thirty-two years as a professional musician. <br /> Throughout the residency at Grady A. Brown Elementary students will learn that "folk <br /> music" is not just a relic from the past, and they will get to experience social studies <br />
