The ArtsCenter
Arts In Education Focus School Program
with professional teaching artists in their classrooms. Not only do students get an opportunity to see a live
performance in a professional theater, they also get to work directly with a professional artist and learn
curriculum through a non-traditional approach. By participating in alternative methods of learning, all
students are able to reach their maximum potential because they are able to learn through the approach
that fits their individual learning styles.
Examples of residencies that will take place from January through April 2014 include:
• Fifth graders at New Hope Elementary will study the Civil Rights Movement through
photography, which connects to the show One Noble Journey.•A Box Marked Freedom.
• First graders at Central Elementary will study literary elements through a musical theater
residency, which connects to the show Junie B Jones.
• Fourth graders at Efland-Cheeks Elementary will study science through drawing (drawings of
existing machines, learning how they work through observation and branching out into
imaginary scientific improvements),which connects to the show Look Out!Science is Coming!
• High school students at Partnership Academy will participate in a videography and graphic
design residency that will correlate with their e-portfolio projects.
Planning is already under way for the residencies taking place January through April 2014. At the beginning
of the school year, teachers (per grade level) chose the show they wanted to see, as well as the art form and
curriculum focus for their respective residencies. The ArtsCenter's Arts In Education Coordinator has
already been working with teachers to secure teaching artists for the various residencies. While all teaching
artists have not been confirmed at this point, they will all be in place by late December. Prior to the start of
the residencies, classroom teachers from that particular grade level, the teaching artist and The ArtsCenter's
Arts In Education Coordinator will meet for a planning session to review goals and discuss residency
logistics. Following the residency, they will all meet again for an evaluation meeting. In addition to this
evaluation tool, The ArtsCenter will distribute student and teacher evaluations to assess the effectiveness of
the experience, as well as communicate regularly with teachers and administrators during and following
residencies. Additionally, curriculum assessments are administered following all residencies to measure
academic growth on the material covered during residencies. The assessments are created with collaboration
from classroom teachers, teaching artists and The ArtsCenter's Arts In Education Coordinator.
The ArtsCenter has successfully implemented 51 residencies in area schools over the last several years
through the Arts In Education program, 37 of which have been ABLE residencies. Furthermore, as
mentioned above, The ArtsCenter has successfully carried out the focus school program at Central
Elementary for the past five years.
Funding in the amount of$1,500 from the Orange County Arts Commission will'specifically go towards
teaching artists fees associated with 16 residencies at four Title 1 schools in Orange County — Central
Elementary, New Hope Elementary, Efland-Cheeks Elementary and Partnership Academy—in the 2013-
2014 school year.
