The ArtsCenter
Arts In Education Focus School Program
Gallery. The Nicholson Gallery features the work of local and regional artists on a rotating basis. The
Gallery exhibitions highlight the work of more than 100 local and regional artists in 12 exhibitions a year.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds
As part of The ArtsCenter's Arts In Education focus school program, all students in Orange County
Schools' three Title 1 elementary schools and the alternative high school will participate in curriculum
integrated art residencies in the 2013-2014 school year, and teachers will take part in professional
development workshop at their schools. Through this program, more than 1,300 underserved children will
get to work with professional teaching artists in their classrooms. The focus school program began in
2008 and was designed to provide arts experiences to underserved youth in area Title 1 schools. Through
a partnership with Orange County Schools, The ArtsCenter worked with Central Elementary from 2008-
2009 to 2012-2013. Due to the success of the program, Orange County Schools asked that the program be
expanded to include all three Title 1 elementary schools in the.district (New Hope Elementary, Efland-
Cheeks Elementary and Central Elementary), as well as the alternative high school (Partnership
Academy) in the 2013-2014 school year.
The following is a demographic breakdown of the four participating Title 1 schools:
School American Asian Hispanic Black White Multi- Male Female Total
Indian racial
Central
Elementary 1 0 53 104 142 18 170 148 318
New Hope
Elementary 2 3 269 50 283 16 321 302 623
Efland-
Cheeks 1 5 90 118 215 23 237 215 452
Elementary
Partnership
Academy 1 0 0 1 7 16 0 1 16 8 24
Central Elementary, located in Hillsborough, has approximately 70% of students receiving free/reduced
lunch. New Hope Elementary, also located in Hillsborough, has 58% free/reduced lunch and the highest
English Language Learner population in the district. Efland-Cheeks Elementary, located in Efland, has
59% free/reduced lunch and one of the largest Exceptional Children (EC)-identified populations in
Orange County and the second smallest identified gifted population. Partnership Academy, located in
Hillsborough with approximately 63%of students receiving free/reduced lunch, is an alternative school of
choice that provides an alternative academic program in the high schools of Orange county Schools. In
addition to offering the standard academic programs, Partnership Academy offers enrichment activities to
enhance core academics and to facilitate students' character development and personal growth. Students
attending all three schools live in Hillsborough or Efland.
From January through April 2014, The ArtsCenter will implement 16 residencies at New Hope
Elementary, Efland-Cheeks Elementary, Central Elementary and Partnership Academy. (Five residencies
are currently taking place in these schools.) With the exception of Partnership Academy, all grade levels
will have Arts-Based Learning Experience (ABLE) residencies (including, but not limited to, residencies
with a visual arts,drama/theater,dance, or music focus). An Arts-Based Learning Experience residency is
a five-day residency designed to help prepare students to see a School Show at The ArtsCenter(art form
and content), while simultaneously teaching curriculum through the arts. All School Shows connect to
specific elements of the curriculum, and an ABLE residency allows students to study this related
curriculum, which is correlated directly with the North Carolina Common Core and Essential Standards,
