t
Questions? Call 9191968-2011. Delivery address.501 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27516
Statement of Purpose
I am requesting funding support for the Twentieth Annual Art in the Garden Sculpture Invitational Exhibition
that takes place in the gardens and surrounding open spaces of Tinka Jordy in Orange County the first and
second weekend in May each year.
This exhibition has been taking place for the past 19 years. The exhibition is a collaborative initiative in which
professional artists expose audiences to a unique arts experience. All of the sculptures in this exhibition are
created for the outdoors. Viewing outdoor sculpture in a natural and domestic garden setting is an excellent
way to enhance the interpretation of sculptural art. The venue allows for the exhibition of very large sculptural
pieces as well as smaller more intimate works placed in a natural outdoor setting. The public is educated in the
realization that art is not only for public spaces and museums but to be enjoyed in everyday life in our homes.
This cooperative exhibition has proven to be a valuable asset to Orange County in that it is providing an
excellent venue to attract the public from as far away as the bordering states of North Carolina. The show has a
substantial draw because the exhibiting artists are professional, nationally recognized artists with strong
followings.
The high caliber of the artist exhibiting enhances the reputation of our county as a place where artistic excellence
is flourishing. It was originally started by William Moore and me, Tinka Jordy in 1994. Our selection process is
to invite artists who we feel meet a criteria of excellence and professionalism. Once artists are participating we
welcome their recommendations to invite future artists as guests. By inviting different guest artist each year,we
keep the annual show exciting for our patrons. I have developed a website specifically for this once a year event
under the name Garden Art Gallery Invitational `'uvti.garieil-art- alierv, cam) so that we can continue to
promote the show throughout the year.Past exhibitors are also featured on the website. The exhibition does not
take commissions from the artist. It is a cooperative effort, with the expenses divided equally among the artists.
All artists are required to be available throughout the exhibition to share insights about their art and process
with the public. This exhibition provides an important venue for professional sculptors to sell and exhibit their
work. For this reason we keep the number of participating artist to 12 or less. It is important goal that our
patrons come away with an experience that is personal, informal but informative. Invariably, they are they are
significantly impressed with the caliber of the art they have seen and the overall experience of the show,
This has proven to be a successful venue for both artist and patrons that are both collectors and new to the
process of buying art. This year will be our twentieth anniversary and we seek funding to further broaden the
reach of our audience to attract visitors who will learn to recognize the cultural richness of Orange County as an
arts destination.
