Thursday,July 28,2005 gr Gazette Community News <br /> PHOTOS <br /> Continued from A-1 <br /> University of Maryland,College Park,said z <br /> a lot of her pieces center on family,more <br /> specifically her daughter and her father. <br /> The piece entitled "In the Moonlit " <br /> Body, Samm," depicts Tyroler-Cooper <br /> looking at an art exhibit layered with an- <br /> other shot of her reading Chinese symbols. <br /> "It's about her dealing with a foreign cut- <br /> tune." <br /> Nicole DeWald,the arts coordinator for <br /> the Community Center, said she enjoys <br /> bringing in artists like Tyroler because they . <br /> often like to get involved by teaching " <br /> workshops. �y <br /> "One thing we do is try to have an ed- <br /> ucational focus," said DeWald of the art <br /> programs offered by the city's Recreation <br /> Department."We look for people who are <br /> willing to work with the public and be A <br /> community leaders." <br /> On Judy 20,Tyroler taught a children's <br /> workshop at the Greenbelt Aquatic and <br /> Fitness Center. <br /> "The children take these mirrors,which ail <br /> are panels of acrylic,"she said. "And one ' J <br /> partner has the mirror and the other has <br /> the camera." <br /> The water and the mirrors create <br /> uuuique self-portraits of the children. <br /> "The camera has a relationship with re- <br /> ality,"Tyroler said."People still think that <br /> when you take a picture of them it's really 5t <br /> them.They still fix their hair and say'oh =' , <br /> don't take my picture now.' The mirror . <br /> does that,too." <br /> Tyroler said she has applied fox anoth- <br /> er grant to do the underwater photo project <br /> with Greenbelt seniors.
