Phase 2• BUMP Musicology After-School Class, 2015-17:The 18-week After-School Class is an <br /> expanded version of the Workshop.After launching the after-school class in the Triangle, we <br /> will expand the Workshop to the Triad. <br /> Phase 3:Tunedln, 2018& beyond: Tunedln is a program of instructional courses and performing <br /> ensembles.There will be options for private lessons,group lessons,small performing <br /> ensembles and large performing ensembles. Instruments include band/orchestra instruments, <br /> voice and African Diaspora instruments(e.g. Mbira,Steel Pan). Tunedln students learn and <br /> perform arrangements of music designed fortheir skill level. BUMP Musicologyand Tunedln are <br /> topically coordinated with each other.After launching Tunedln in the Triangle,we will expand <br /> the after-school class to the Triad. <br /> BUMP develops and produces,and will eventually market,its sequential curricular materials, <br /> along with implementation&assessment tools.This collection of unique curricular resources is <br /> the engine behind BUMP Musicology and Tunedln. <br /> PARTNERSHIPS:Strategic partnerships are an important key to our success. We have a partnership <br /> with Duke Memorial United Methodist Church that provides a cash grant, free office space,free <br /> program space,staff support,volunteers and board members.A team of graduate students <br /> from the UNC-CH Library Science Program completed a workflow project that created the <br /> system we use for tracking lesson development and materials. Duke University Law School's <br /> Community Enterprise serves as our legal counsel,and oversaw the move from MA to NC.We <br /> partnered with Durham Congregations In Action and are hosting a YO:Durham high school <br /> intern for the 2013-14 school year.This past summer,a music education doctoral student from <br /> UNCG interned with us and helped write a set of logic models to guide curriculum <br /> development, instruction and assessment.A team of professors and graduate students from <br /> UNC-CH, Duke and UNCG are currently creating an assessment program to gather,interpret <br /> and report the data needed to determine the efficacy of our model. <br /> In addition to institutional partners,Chapel Hill community members support the BUMP vision <br /> in significant ways.Thus far, over one hundred-fifty people have attended BUMP fund/friend- <br /> raising houseparties (with live entertainment)and more events are planned. We have received <br /> pro bono professional services from a business planning consultant,three graphic designers,a <br /> website designer,a videographer and a marketing consultant.About forty volunteers have <br /> contributed to the project over the past six months. <br /> PROPOSED USESOF GRANT FUNDS:This proposal seeks$1500 funding for Phase I BUMP Musicology <br /> Workshops that will take place Spring 2014,Session 3 (Apr 8—May 29)at two CHCCS schools. <br /> The CHCCS 6-week Workshop is a rich experience of learning about and performing music of <br /> the African Diaspora for youth grades 2—3.The Workshop is a 2.5 hour after-school program <br /> for up to thirty youth.Once a week for six weeks,students participate in two activities:a BUMP <br /> Musicology lesson focused on history/culture,and performing on voice/instruments tied to the <br /> lesson. Participants receive a completion certificate and take-home activities to share with <br /> family and friends.A video feedback booth for participants and family members to share their <br /> 2 <br />
