WHEREAS, during her years of service, she has been recognized by a multitude of <br /> organizations including the North Carolina National Association for the Mentally III, <br /> the National Coalition Against the Death Penalty, the North Carolina Academy of <br /> Trial Lawyers, the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina <br /> and the North Carolina Central University School of Law; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners does <br /> hereby recognize Senator Ellie Kinnaird for her progressive leadership and <br /> commitment to the sanctity of the political process in the North Carolina Senate <br /> while representing residents of Orange County. <br /> This, the first day of October 2013. <br /> A motion was made by Commissioner Gordon, seconded by Commissioner Price to <br /> adopt the resolution recognizing Ellie Kinnaird for her years of service to the people of Orange <br /> County and authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> Ellie Kinnaird said she never expected to work in government. She said Orange <br /> County is unique, and its values are such a part of the leadership of our state. She <br /> appreciated being able to serve the residents of Orange County. <br /> b. Arts & Humanities Month —2013 Piedmont Laureate John Claude Bemis <br /> The Board was introduced to and heard a brief selection from Hillsborough resident <br /> and children's book author, educator and presenter John Claude Bemis, the 2013 Piedmont <br /> Laureate. <br /> Martha Shannon introduced John Claude Bemis. She noted that this is the 5th year of <br /> this program, co-sponsored by the Orange County Arts Commission, the City of Raleigh Arts <br /> Commission, the Durham Arts Council, the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, <br /> and the Alamance Arts Council. She said throughout this year Mr. Bemis has brought <br /> together people to celebrate the art of writing. <br /> John Claude Bemis said he has lived in Orange County for over 20 years, but he grew <br /> up in eastern N.C., in Dawson's Creek. He read a brief selection of some of his writing. <br /> C. Orange County Disability Employment Awareness Month Proclamation <br /> The Board considered a proclamation declaring October 2013 as Disability Employment <br /> Awareness Month in Orange County and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br /> Deana Jones represents North Carolina Vocation and Rehabilitation.
