Resolution Recognizing Senator Ellie Kinnaird for Service to Orange <br /> 8 County <br /> 9 The Board considered a resolution recognizing Ellie Kinnaird for her years of service to <br /> 10 the people of Orange County and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 Chair Jacobs read the following proclamation <br /> 13 <br /> 14 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 15 <br /> 16 RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING NORTH CAROLINA <br /> 17 SENATOR ELLIE KINNAIRD <br /> 18 <br /> 19 WHEREAS, Eleanor "Ellie" Kinnaird was elected to the North Carolina State Senate by the <br /> 20 voters of the 23 d District, which includes Orange County, for nine (9) terms from <br /> 21 1997 to 2013; and, <br /> 22 <br /> 23 WHEREAS, Ellie Kinnaird was elected as the mayor for the Town of Carrboro from 1987 to <br /> 24 1996; and, <br /> 25 <br /> 26 WHEREAS, her time in office represents 26 years as an elected public servant; and, <br /> 27 <br /> 28 WHEREAS, Ellie Kinnaird has demonstrated commitment to protecting and strengthening the <br /> 29 institution of state government through her perseverance and statesmanship; and, <br /> 30 <br /> 31 WHEREAS, Ellie Kinnaird has been a persistent advocate for the rights of the underprivileged, <br /> 32 a dedicated protector of the environment, a champion of social justice, a resolute <br /> 33 opponent of the death penalty, and a supporter of fulfilling employment and quality <br /> 34 public education; and, <br /> 35 <br /> 36 WHEREAS, Ellie Kinnaird has gone about her public duties with an unflagging spirit, a <br /> 37 willingness to attend diverse community events that reflect and support the values <br /> 38 of Orange County, and a devotion to principle regardless of obstacles or <br /> 39 opposition; and, <br /> 40 <br /> 41 WHEREAS, during her years in the Senate, Ellie Kinnaird served as Chair of the Appropriations <br /> 42 Committee on Justice and Public Safety, as Chair of the Mental Health and Youth <br /> 43 Services Committee, as Vice-Chair of the Agriculture/Environment/Natural <br /> 44 Resources Committee, and also served on the Senate committees for Finance, <br /> 45 State and Local Government, and Health Care; and, <br /> 46 <br /> 47 WHEREAS, during her years of service, she has been recognized by a multitude of <br /> 48 organizations including the North Carolina National Association for the Mentally III, <br /> 49 the National Coalition Against the Death Penalty, the North Carolina Academy of <br />
