The Board' s direction to staff was to develop
a revised fee schedule that is more fair than the existing schedule,
while maintaining a structure that will recoup the costs of the fire
inspection program.
The Board considered a proposal for a revised schedule of fire
inspection fees at their May 14 and May 16 meetings . The Board' s
comments indicated that the cost of inspecting County and school
buildings should be borne by the County, and not be included in the
costs of the fire inspection program to be recouped from fees collected
for fire inspections of other facilities required to be inspected.
Staff also revised the previous proposal to address concerns that lower
fees be applied to the smallest facilities that must be inspected.
The Fire Marshal estimates that about 15-2001 of the effort in the fire
inspection program is directed to County and school buildings . Staff
have therefore revised the proposed fire inspection fee schedule for
1996-97 to reduce by about 20o the fee revenue that would be produced
by inspections of other facilities. Staff also suggests splitting the
lowest square footage level included in the previous proposal so that
instead of one fee for facilities sized between 0-2, 500 square feet,
there are categories of 0-1, 000 square feet and 1, 001-2, 500 square
feet .
