11
Cedar Grove Property Owner
October 11, 1996
Page Two
In May of 1995 the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission held a series of
community meetings to gather public comment on the County's Historic Preservation
Plan, which is an element of the Orange County Comprehensive Plan. (The meeting for
northern Orange was held at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church.) Citizens attending
these meetings were asked to identify places they felt were the most historically significant
in the county. The Cedar Grove crossroads area was consistently cited as one of the
County's most treasured historic resources because of its rural character and sense of place.
The Historic Preservation Commission has scheduled its October meeting for Thursday,
October 24 at 7:00 PM at the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. Please join us
for a presentation and discussion of how Cedar Grove could be recognized nationally as a
unique, historic community. If you agree that placing Cedar Grove on the National
Register of Historic Places would be worthwhile, the Historic Preservation Commission
would like to begin the nomination process.
Enclosed is additional information about the historical significance of Cedar Grove,
excerpted from Ms. Sexton's report. Also enclosed is a series of"National Register Fact
Sheets" from the State Historic Preservation Office of the North Carolina Division of
Archives and History, and a brochure about the National Register from the National Park
Service.
We look forward to meeting with you on October 24. In the meantime, if you have
additional questions, please feel free to call our staff person,Don Belk, at the Orange
County Planning Department, 732-8181,extension 2594.
Sincerely yours,
Norma White,Chair
Orange County Historic Preservation Commission
/db
enclosures
Attachment#3
