Informal Resident Advisory Work Group <br />Cedar Grove Community Center <br />July 16, 2013 <br />Page 3of4 <br />10 <br />• The final solution needs to examine the relationship between the park uses and the building uses, <br />especially the kitchen and restrooms <br />■ Possible use of a pass -thru window so food could be cooked outside and served inside. <br />• The need for Classroom spaces was discussed. Classrooms should be available for some of the following <br />uses <br />• Durham Tech <br />• Computer Access <br />• Distance Learning <br />• Arts Programs <br />• Science Programs <br />• Continuing Education thru Duke, UNC -CH and NCSU <br />• Internet Cafe <br />o The group discussed the possibility of large spaces with movable walls to form smaller rooms like library <br />in Chapel Hill <br />■ The facility needs to include an athletic component. Athletic /Recreation programs would <br />include: <br />• Pick -up Basketball <br />• Existing space only 78'x 43' with only 14' -8" clearance to structure above the <br />floor. <br />• A full size basketball court requires a space 104'x60' minimum with 20' clear to <br />the structure. <br />• The <br />• Zumba /exercise classes <br />o Requires a space with good acoustics <br />• Senior activities <br />• Checkers <br />• Chess <br />• Cards <br />• Pool <br />• Ping Pong <br />o The group discussed the question, "What programs and amenities will bring people to the center ?" — <br />■ "If you build it will they come" or does the building need to be more. <br />• Public Transportation to the center will be a key to encouraging use its programs and spaces. <br />• This part of county has a high concentration of seniors and programs geared toward seniors <br />would be beneficial. <br />• Programs that are geared toward local interests <br />• This part of the county is heavy agricultural district <br />o A teaching kitchen would be something good to have that could be used to <br />teach canning or other activities. <br />o A Farmers Market <br />o Food Bank — one is already held in park picnic shelter once a month <br />o Voting / Voting Drives <br />■ A potential "internet cafe/ social lounge" was discussed and that this should have soft chairs and <br />access to coffee. <br />
