1 <br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: November 5, 2013 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 4 -c <br />SUBJECT: "The Nature of Orange" Photography Contest <br />DEPARTMENT: DEAPR PUBLIC HEARING: (Y /N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACTS: <br />1) Winning Photos David Stancil, 245 -2510 <br />2) Contest Brochure Rich Shaw, 245 -2510 <br />Beth Young, 245 -2518 <br />PURPOSE: To recognize the winners and thank all participants of "The Nature of Orange" <br />2013 Photography Contest. <br />BACKGROUND: The Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation ( DEAPR) <br />completed its annual "The Nature of Orange" Photography Contest in June 2013. The goal of <br />the contest is to inspire exploration, celebration and appreciation of Orange County's diverse <br />landscapes and outdoor experiences. Photographers help document the beauty and diversity <br />of natural resources, and people connecting to their environment. <br />A total of 74 photographs were submitted in May 2013 — an increase of 15% from the previous <br />year. A panel of judges selected first, second and third place winners from the Youth and Adult <br />divisions. This year's judges were photographers Pat Lloyd, Eric Saunders, and David Hunt. <br />Winners received a congratulatory letter, certificate, and a small monetary award. The <br />photographs will be displayed at the Orange County Historical Museum, Orange County Public <br />Library, Visitors Center, and the John M. Link, Jr. Government Services Center. In addition, <br />winning photographs are displayed on the Orange County DEAPR website under the "breaking <br />news" section http: / /www.orangecountync.gov /deapr/ and on the department's Facebook Page. <br />The 2013 contest winners are as follows: <br />Youth: 1St Place — Kirby Lau; 2nd Place — Kirby Lau; 3rd Place — Katerina Gilfillen <br />Adult: 1St Place — Darren Strickland; 2nd Place — Pringle Teetor; 3rd Place — Statler Gilfillen <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Interim Manager recommends that the Board congratulate the <br />2013 photography contest winners, and thank all those who participated in this community <br />event. <br />
