43 <br /> SAFETY <br /> An adequate safety net for children and families exists when... <br /> • houses, schools, and other community settings are physically safe. <br /> • personal safety is assured in homes, neighborhoods, schools, and other community settings. <br /> Key Components <br /> Prevention and eradication of the following: <br /> ► accidents <br /> ► environmental hazards <br /> ► domestic violence <br /> ► violent crimes <br /> ► street violence <br /> child abuse <br /> ► substance abuse <br /> Essential Core Services <br /> ✓ Affordable,Basic Housing. Families need access to affordable, basic housing that is <br /> sanitary, and included running water, electricity and heat. <br /> ✓ Emergency Shelter. Children and families need access to emergency shelter, particularly <br /> those who are homeless or experiencing domestic violence. <br /> ✓ Safety Inspections. To ensure that homes,schools, and community and work sites are safe, <br /> adequate safety inspections need to be maintained at the county level. <br /> ✓ Community Safety Education.Children and families need public information on home and <br /> environment safety precautions, and injury and accident prevention. <br /> ✓ Community Police and High Crime Coverage. Community police need to be available in <br /> high crime areas, and more safety officers need to be available during high crime times of the <br /> day or season. Public schools need to be safe environments for children. <br /> ✓ Child Protective Services. Child Protection Services are essential for children at risk of <br /> neglect or abuse. <br /> ✓ Crisis Counseling. When children or families are experiencing crisis,counseling services <br /> needs to be available in the community. <br /> ✓ Community Health Education. Health education awareness and outreach services must be <br /> available to promote good health and nutrition and disease prevention. <br />
