38 <br /> EDUCATION, CHILD CARE, AA CHILD DEVELOPMENT <br /> An adequate safety net for children and families exists when.. <br /> • every child has a reasonable chance to develop physically,emotionally, intellectually. <br /> • children aren't robbed from their childhood by taking on parental roles. <br /> • families are able to find safe, affordable quality child care. <br /> • each adult is literate. <br /> • every child can go to school in a setting that teaches to their strengths, values, and <br /> diversity in learning. <br /> Key Components <br /> 1. Practical job training <br /> No Lifelong education <br /> ► Child care and early education <br /> ► Parenting resources <br /> ► Health education <br /> ► Vocational and job training <br /> ► Considers public, private, and alternative education including home schooling <br /> Essential Core Services <br /> ✓ Affordable,quality,child care services,and resource and referral services.Currently, <br /> child care resources are particularly inadequate for afterschool, evenings, and summer care; <br /> and child care subsidies are not adequate for all families who quality for services. <br /> ✓ Parenting resources and information about child development. The Committee supports <br /> the use of family resource centers to promote parenting and believes these centers should be <br /> located at the schools and in high-risk neighborhoods. <br /> ./ Respite care. Respite care services are needed for families who are caring for handicapped <br /> children and elderly parents. <br /> ✓ Health Education. Health education needs to be offered in the schools and elsewhere in the <br /> community. <br /> ✓ Literacy Training. Literacy training needs to be available for those adults who are literate to <br /> ensure that they and their children learn to read which is an essential skill needed for today's <br /> society. The Committee supports the use and expansion of community-based libraries and <br /> bookmobile& <br />
