Orange County NC Website
There is an overwhelming message that the youth representatives of Orange County
think a county mechanism(place, organization) that is youth directed might allow them
to pursue their own responsibilities in the community.
Forum II: March 27th, 1996
Following Forum I,the steering committee wanted further prioritization of their
recommendations-- and a way of presenting their agenda to the community. This time,
the youth met at the Homestead Community Center. Again, over 100 youth from the
high schools met. They used the focus group system again to further expand the major
points of the first forum. From their discussions, they listed the most important issues.
Altogether, they prioritized eleven areas that they feel are of primary concern. Along
with recommendations, the students made suggestions of what could be done to address
the issues.
General recommendations from Forum II:
1. Cheaper places to go: youth center, clubs, etc.
2. Student representative on the School Boards
3. Control of smoking in schools
4. More forums involving all youth
5. Youth projects
6. Inter-school council
7. Newspaper(communication)
8. Job information/listing/search help
9. Equal opportunities for all schools
10. Youth Radio
11. Parent involvement
3
