BACKGROUND: James B. Hunt, Jr., Governor of North Carolina, has proclaimed the week of April 14 - 20, 1996, as National Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week, in North Carolina, in recognition of the telecommunicators that work m emergency dispatch centers serving the citizens of this state. Two national organizations also recognize and proclaim this week on behalf of telecommunicators nationwide. The organizations are Association of Public Safety Communications Officials and National Emergency Number Association. Telecommunicators in Orange County are active in both organizations, working toward enhancing the quality of service communications centers provide. Orange County's communications center provides 9-1-1 services to all citizens in the County, and dispatch the appropriate emergency services) and law enforcement, in time of need Orange County's tekcommunicators are among the highest trained in the State. The County's communications training program has been requested by 57 other centers and two other state associations. Telecommunicators provide a valuable service to the citizens and make Orange County a safer place to live. RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation designating the week of April 14 - 20, 1996 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week, in Orange County.
