5602 Lockridge Rd.
(Orange County)
Durham, NC 27705-9099
Moses Carey
Chairman
Orange County Board of Commissioners
P_O. Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 2728
Dear Moses Carey.,
I am writing to you on behalf Of the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting
Committee an Peace and Social Concerns.
April 4 is the anniversary of the murder of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. This act of violence ended the life of a great world leader
and the best known American to use active nonviolence to and
oppression. It is therefore appropriate to mark April 4 as a "Day
Without Violence". The idea for an International Day Without Violence
originated with the Peace Studies Association of Earlham College,
Richmond, Indiana. The Chapel Hill Friends Meeting Peace and Social
Concerns Committee requests the County Commissioners to declare April
4, 1996 as "A Day Without Violence"_ This declaration is consistent
with the leadership role Oranges County has taken to diminish all kinds
of violence, especially gun violence.
In addition to observing the symbolism of a day without violence
the county should be called on to focus on alternatives to violence,
emphasize conflict resolution, better intergroup relations_ It is an
opportunity to join together with individuals and organizations around
the world to create a world without violence.
I have enclosed a proposed resolution Please contact me if
your want more information.
i sorely,
Robert J.
