3 <br /> North ,�+; <br /> �7*1 <br /> JAMES B.HUNT JR. <br /> GOVERNOR <br /> SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK <br /> 1996 <br /> BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA <br /> A PROCLAMATION <br /> WHEREAS,North Carolinians know severe weather cannot be controlled. Rain,floods. <br /> ice and snow events all struck much of our state before January ended,taking the lives of several <br /> citizens. North Carolina will experience more severe weather this year,and <br /> WHEREAS,tornadoes are another form of severe weather. Twenty-two tornadoes struck <br /> North Carolina last year. These storms,lasting just a matter of moments,are one of nature's <br /> most terrifying displays;and <br /> WHEREAS,our capabilities for identifying and tracking these stoners have gotten better. <br /> But it is everyone's responsibility to know the proper actions to take should a tomado threaten. <br /> By being aware and prepared,we can save lives and mm==' injuries;and <br /> WHEREAS,the multi-agency commitment to public awareness regarding the dangers of <br /> tornadoes is to be commended. The Division of Emergency Management within the North <br /> Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety,the North Carolina Department of <br /> Public Instruction,and the National Weather Service have joined forces to inform and educate <br /> North Carolinians about tornado safety; <br /> NOW,THEREFORE,I,JAMES B.HUNT JR..Governor of the State of North Carolina. <br /> do hereby proclaim March 3-9, 1996,as"Severe Weather Awareness Week"in North <br /> Carolina,and urge all citizens to participate in its observance by availing themselves of <br /> information that will contribute to the preservation of life and property. <br /> JAMES B.HUNT JR. <br /> S WHEREOF,I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the <br /> State of lira at the Capitol in Raleigh this second day of February in the year of our <br /> Lord nin uadred and ninety-six.and of the Independence of the United States of America <br /> the two huadred and nineteenth. <br />
