REPORT RECOMMENDATIONS
Introduction
The Recreation and Park Work Group provides the following recommendations to the
Orange County Assembly of Governments and the Orange County and Chapel
Hill/Carrboro School Boards. Inherent in this document are many possibilities to work in
unison for the provision of more effective and efficient recreation and park services.
During discussions of the Work Group, a plethora of other recreation and park issues
came to the forefront, but the Work Group believes that placing all of these issues on the
table would to be too inundating at this time. However, the Recreation and Park Work
Group includes in their report a listing under the following "Future Directions/Trends" so
that these ideas may be recorded.
In realizing the importance of the issues under consideration, the Recreation and Park
Work Group completed this report in a very short, self-imposed time period.
Nevertheless, the recommendations immediately serve to:
-establish principles for coordinated county-wide recreation and park facility
planning
-foster greater cooperation in use of existing facilities
-support private recreation providers and public/private partnerships
Recommendations
• Set standards based on ranking with other Triangle Area counties. Determine
type of park and recreation facilities to be surveyed. Develop mechanism for
annual review of park and facilities standards by all jurisdictions.
• Although the three jurisdictions use different formulae to define their recreation
and park requirements within their Land Use Ordinances, the philosophy and
intent of all are the same. It is recommended that the three Planning Departments
consider developing a most preferred set of recreation requirements that could be
included in all three jurisdictions' Land Use Ordinances.
Page 12
