13
October 7, 1993
Page 2
National Register and the listing process. Please note that the State Profes-
sional Review Committee described in the =act sheets has been renamed North
Carolina National Register Advisory Committee.
If the local government and property owners within the above-referenced dis-
trict are interested in having the areas nominated to the National Register,
the most efficient means is for the property owners, local historical groups,
and/or neighborhood associations to join forces with local government to
sponsor the preparation of a formal National Register nomination. The com-
munity may engage the services of a qualified National Register consultant to
prepare the necessary research and documentation. The consultant would charge
professional fees, based on the length of time necessary to document the dis-
trict with maps, photographs, and architectural and historical analysis. In
return, the community would gain the honor of listing, limited protection from
potentially adverse effects of state- and federally-assisted projects, and,
for income-producing historic properties, eligibility for federal investment
tax credits for certified rehabilitations.
The State Historic Preservation Office offers a limited 50% matching grant
program to local governments to assist in the conduct of historic property
surveys and National Register nominations. If you would like more information
about this program, please contact one of the persons named below.
Finally, I must add that listing in the National Register is separate and dis-
tinct from local historic district designation under G.S. 160A-400. Whether
the proposed district is ever designated a locally zoned historic district
will be up to the district's property owners and the local government.
if you have questions about the Orange County survey, please contact Marvin
Collins, Planning Director, 306F Revere Rd. , Hillsborough, NC 27278, 919/732-
8181 ext. 2592.
If you have questions about the National Register of Historic Places, contact
Linda Edmisten, National Register Coordinator for the State Historic Preserva-
tion Office, 109 _E. Jones Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27601-2807, 919/733-6545.
Sincere ,
William S. Price, Jr.
State Historic Preservati n Officer
WSP,Jr./sam
enclosures
cc: Marvin Collins, Planning Director, County of Orange
