The field work for
the survey was conducted by Todd Peck and Jody Carter, and was undertaken in
cooperation with the State Historic Preservation Office of the North Carolina
Division of Archives and History. One of the objectives of a historic sites
survey is to identify those properties and districts that appear to be
eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, the nation's honor roll
of historic properties.
On July 8, 1993, Mr. Peck and Ms. Carter presented the results of their survey
to the North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee (NRAC) at its
quarterly meeting in Raleigh. The NRAC is a board of professionals and
citizens with expertise in history, architectural history, and archaeology,
and advises me on the eligibility of properties for the National Register.
This letter is to notify you that the above-referenced districts were among 21
individual properties and 2 historic districts in Orange County approved by
the NRAC on July 8 for addition to the Study List for the National Register of
Historic Places. Placement on the Study List means that the Committee
determined that the district appears to be eligible for nomination to the
National Register.
Please note that placement on the Study List does not mean automatic nomina-
tion to the National Register of Historic Places. It means only that the dis-
trict appears to be eligible for listing in the Register and warrants further
study of its history and significance. Study List designation places no obli-
gations or restrictions on the local government or property owners. - Also,
please note that a district may not be nominated to the National Register over
the objections of a majority of private owners of property within the proposed
district.
