Eligible projects <br /> include architectural and archeological surveys,preparation of nominations to the <br /> National Register of Historic Places, and preservation plans. <br /> This year, an estimated $130,000 is available for preservation grants to local <br /> communities or nonprofit organizations. In accordance with federal requirements, <br /> $70,000 is reserved for grants to communities, such as Orange County, that <br /> participate in the Certified Local Government (CLG) program. Grant awards, <br /> representing up to 60% of estimated project costs, are generally in the$5-15,000 <br /> range. <br /> Grant applications must be completed and submitted to the SHPO by January 31, <br /> 1996. Grant awards will be announced in March, 1996 and projects must be <br /> completed by July 31, 1997. <br /> The attached 1996 CLG Survey and Planning Grant application requests funding <br /> to complete a nomination of the Cedar Grove crossroads area to the National <br /> Register of Historic Places. During public input meetings for the Historic <br /> Preservation Element held in May, 1995, citizens consistently identified Cedar <br /> Grove as one of the county's most treasured locales. Furthermore, in October, <br /> 1993, the State Historic Preservation Office recognized the Cedar Grove <br /> crossroads as potentially eligible as a National Register Historic District (see <br /> attached letter; page 12). The Cedar Grove crossroads and environs contain <br /> suitable contributing characteristics to qualify as the County's first rural historic <br /> district. The Cedar Grove area exhibits elements of a historic cultural landscape, <br /> a landscape that has evolved through use by the people whose activities and <br />
