1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No. —VIM--k
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: August 5, 1996
SUBJECT: Animal Protection Society Contract Renewal
DEPARTMENT: Manager's Office PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/1) No
BUDGET AMENDMENT: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Contract Albert T. Kittrell, Assistant County Manager, ext. 2300
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 227-2031
PURPOSE: To renew the annual contract between Orange County and the Animal Protection
Society (APS).
BACKGROUND: Each year, the County reviews and renews its agreement with the APS
whereunder the APS operates and maintains the Orange County Animal Shelter on behalf of the
County. The contract renewal for 1996-97 continues the provisions of prior years' contracts, but
with a modification to paragraph 2F. This section previously made APS responsible to "Require
citizens redeeming animals from the shelter to pay applicable reclamation and boarding fees
established by County, and account for and remit same to County quarterly." Since the 1995-96
fiscal year, APS has retained the approximately $4,000 annual reclamation fees to help defray some
of the animal shelter operating cost. The modification of paragraph 2F reflected in the updated
contract would formalize this practice and provide for the APS to retain reclamation fees to partially
offset shelter operating costs.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the updated
contract with APS for the 1996-97 Fiscal Year.
