Grier, 919 - 245 -2450 <br />Todd LoFrese, 919 - 967 -8211 <br />Pam Jones, 919 - 732 -8126 <br />PURPOSE: To discuss the ongoing assessments of capital facility needs for older schools in <br />both the Chapel Hill — Carrboro City Schools ( CHCCS) and Orange County Schools (OCS) <br />Districts. <br />BACKGROUND: Over the past year, both school districts have discussed with the <br />County /Schools Collaboration Work group and their respective Boards of Education the growing <br />need to address repairs and upgrades for older school buildings and facilities. <br />CHCCS has conducted an assessment of their older schools and facilities prepared by Mosley <br />Associates. CHCCS assessment of their older school estimates and capital needs estimates <br />potential repairs and upgrades will range from $52 million (low end) to $170 million (all <br />encompassing). <br />Orange County Schools has just begun their assessment of the capital facility's needs. Based <br />on Average Daily Membership (ADM) percentage, a preliminary estimate for Orange County <br />Schools could range between $20 million (low end) to $68 million (upper end). Orange County's <br />Assessment will be provided later in the year. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is not a financial impact with information being provided. There will <br />be a financial impact in future years as decisions are made to proceed with funding to address <br />older facilities. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Boards accept the information <br />and provide feedback and direction to staff. <br />
