r <br /> Curriculum Connections' <br /> Soul Street Dance Company will help introduce our students to the world of urban street <br /> dances, their origins, and distinctive features. "These four young men — formerly <br /> considered at risk — have inspired young audiences all over the world by sharing their <br /> stories of how they found focus through dance and now are working as professional <br /> performers.'" What a great introduction to hip hop—without the harmful stereotypes! <br /> Ms. Li Liu will help expand our community's knowledge of Chinese art and culture to all <br /> grade levels and classrooms. The art of balance and acrobatics stretches far back into <br /> China's past, but Li Liu brings it into the present. Excited audience members are asked to <br /> participate in ribbon dances, plate spinning, and other parts of the show.While performing, <br /> Ms. Liu also introduces the students to stories about Chinese language and culture <br /> (important traditions, significant colors,etc.). <br /> These two performers will help Glenwood meet the following NC Standard Course of <br /> Study requirements and serve as a starting point for even more related activities: <br /> ✓K.R.1 Use a variety of thinking skills to analyze and evaluate dance. <br /> ✓K.C.1 Understand cultural,historical,and interdisciplinary connections with dance. <br /> ✓K/1/2/3/4/5.CR.1 Understand global,interdisciplinary,and 21st century connections with music. <br /> ✓1.CR.1.1 Recognize how music is used in customs and traditions of various cultures. <br /> ✓2.CR.1.1 Exemplify music representing the heritage,customs,and traditions of various cultures. <br /> ✓3.CR.1.1 Exemplify how music is used by various groups for artistic expression within the local community. <br /> ✓4.C.1 Understand cultural,historical,and interdisciplinary connections with dance. <br /> ✓4.CR.1 Understand global,interdisciplinary,and 21st century connections with music. <br /> ✓5.C.1 Understand cultural,historical,and interdisciplinary connections with dance. <br /> ✓5.CR.1 Understand global,interdisciplinary,and 21st century connections with music. <br /> Both artists provide Study Guides (attached herein) and we will be working with our <br /> Music" and Art"' Departments beforehand to integrate the performances with lessons. <br /> Proposed Uses of Grant Funds <br /> Each year, the Glenwood PTA Cultural Enrichment Committee has brought several <br /> performing artists to the school. This has become a well-loved and much-appreciated <br /> part of our yearly services.This year we propose to bring the following two artists. <br /> Li Liu <br /> Thursday January 16, 2014 <br /> $700-$750 per show(2 shows) <br /> 9:15 AM: Kindergarten-2nd grade, approximately 250 students <br /> 10:30 AM: 3rd-5`h grade, approximately 250 students <br /> Soul Street Dance Company <br />
